Mixed numbers combine a whole number with a fraction, like 2 and 3/4, and adding them trips up many students because there are two parts to carry. The method below keeps both parts under control. You can check your work with the free tools on Calc Solver.
What a Mixed Number Is
A mixed number has a whole part and a fractional part, such as 1 and 2/3. It equals the whole plus the fraction: 1 and 2/3 means 1 + 2/3. Before adding, remember the golden rule: fractions can only be added when they share a denominator.
Step 1: Add the Whole Numbers
Add the whole parts first and set the sum aside. For 2 and 3/4 plus 1 and 1/4, the whole parts give 2 + 1 = 3. This part never causes trouble; the fractions are where the work happens.
Step 2: Make the Denominators Match
If the fractions already share a denominator, add them directly: 3/4 + 1/4 = 4/4 = 1. If they do not, convert to a common denominator first. For 2 and 1/2 plus 1 and 2/3, the common denominator is 6: 1/2 becomes 3/6 and 2/3 becomes 4/6, giving 3/6 + 4/6 = 7/6.
Step 3: Combine and Simplify
Add the whole-number sum to the fraction sum, then simplify. In the first example, 3 + 1 = 4. In the second, the whole parts give 3, the fractions give 7/6, which is 1 and 1/6, so the total is 3 + 1 and 1/6 = 4 and 1/6. Always convert an improper fraction result into a mixed number and reduce it to lowest terms.
The Convert-First Alternative
An alternative method converts each mixed number to an improper fraction first: 2 and 3/4 becomes 11/4, and 1 and 1/4 becomes 5/4. Adding gives 16/4 = 4, the same answer. This method shines when borrowing is needed in subtraction, but for addition the whole-parts method is usually faster.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
First, adding numerators and denominators separately (3/4 + 1/4 is not 4/8). Second, forgetting to convert an improper fraction sum back to a mixed number. Third, skipping the simplification step, which leaves the answer technically correct but not in final form.
Practice Problems to Try
Add 3 and 1/5 plus 2 and 2/5, then 1 and 3/4 plus 2 and 5/6, then 4 and 2/3 plus 1 and 1/3. Simplify every answer.
